Rare 1960’s Ercol Model 457 Butler’s Tray Table

We’re particularly thrilled with this smart, little table. Not only is it a rare and special find but we acquired it in very grubby, worn condition. We knew it was a rough diamond waiting to shine though. This is the model 457 tray table, sometimes called the ‘Butler’ table. It was launched as part of Ercol’s Windsor range in 1961 and produced until 1970 – this piece dates from the sixties. It features a rounded table top with handle grips making the table easy to move around to wherever it’s needed and a lower rimmed shelf. The wonderful thing about Ercol is that it restores so very well. That’s the beauty of of solid wood – elm and beech in this case. It has been carefully stripped back and refinished with Karl’s skill and expertise. This takes a great deal of time but the results are always worth it. In our view Ercol dating from this period is the finest in terms of the wood quality and grain. The table top and shelf are English elm, favoured by Ercol until its use in furniture making was pretty much eradicated by Dutch Elm disease. A super midcentury piece restored and ready for another lease of life.
